This is how the Chilean nuts and dehydrated fruit industry has understood it, and punctually, that of prunes, who were present at the 24th edition of the Gulfood trade show, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from February 17th to 21st.

Executives from ChilePrunes partner companies such as Frutexsa, Onizzo, Huertos del Valle, Pacific Nut, Prunesco, SuperFruit were present at the stand organized by ProChile in what is considered the event that kicks off the commercial season.

José Antonio Soffia, from SuperFruit, points out that this fair is important given the period of the year in which it takes place, the information obtained from there, as well as the contacts and business it generates.  For prunes,” he adds, “this year was relevant given the situation of fresh prune for Chile and the Argentinian harvest (low production volume).

“We were with the people in the industry to see estimates, how much was sent fresh and where markets would be opened. In the specific case of SuperFruit, we made contacts and closed deals, which was very positive… we managed to open new markets”.

On new markets, Soffia sees good opportunities in the Middle East and India, especially considering that there will not be a large volume from Argentina.

Claudia Marangunic, from Onizzo Exportaciones, thinks that this particular fair has a lot of focus on nuts with emphasis on walnuts. Having made the observation, she adds that visitors also “learns the availability of our prune. These are markets that are still little covered or do not know the benefits of this fruit so it will always be interesting to try to access them.

She adds that European importers are attending this fair in increasing numbers so “it is a good opportunity to remind them that we also have the Chilean prune among the dehydrated products that our country can offer”.

In this event, around 5,000 exhibitors spread over 900,000 square meters took part in a show which received around 100,000 professionals, figures which reflect the potential for expansion offered by the Arab market.
