The answer, although it still needs more research, seems to lie in the fact that prunes consumption increases the presence in the blood of a compound called IGF-1 that stimulates bone formation. Prunes are also very rich in polyphenols. Specifically, we can find coffee acids, chlorogenic and neochlorogenic acid, cumaric acid or coffee acid; all of them essential to the bone. Without going any further, chlorogenic acid protects against damage caused by oxidative stress to osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone production.
The truth is that this research is not the only one that has abounded in the excellent results of a diet with prunes in patients with osteoporosis. Thus, we can cite research conducted in 2010 in the Department of Medicine at the University of California that showed that prunes not only have a preventive effect, but can also reverse the damage caused to bone by descaling.
Best of all, you don’t need to consume a huge amount of prunes to start fighting the dreaded osteoporosis. Studies to date have shown that only by eating five prunes a day can prevent such common bone loss in postmenopausal women.
